Inspired by the Luau themed Dr. Sketchy’s last week, I thought about having a Luau myself for friends. Here’s a step-by-step guide to throwing your own:

Set the scene Totem poles, postcards, kitsch ornaments, raffia, and flowers – mountains of them! Make the place as colourful as you can. Colour is an instant mood lifter.

Prepare the food Seafood like shrimp on skewers with vegetables. Roasted ham, sweet potatoes and tropical fruits, especially pineapples. Hawaiian pizza is a cheap option. The usual party food too like crisps and nuts are a fail safe. Finish off with refreshing and colourful ice pops.

Mix the cocktails Preparation is key. Some cocktails have several ingredients. To save you buying up the whole store just for a few cocktails, pick some that share ingredients. Make a cocktail list and stick to it. It makes for a less stressful evening and you won’t be tied to the kitchen all night because you can make a few at a time.

Down to the important stuff; the list. Tropical cocktails like Piña Colada, Blue Hawaiian, Pineapple Rum, Fruit Punch and (not forgetting your non-drinkers or designated drivers) Ginger-Orange Mocktails.

But no Luau is complete without a Mai Tai:

  • 2 tablespoons light rum
  • 2 tablespoons orange curaçao
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 1 dash orgeat (almond flavoured syrup)
  • 1 dash simple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon dark rum
  • Mint, a pineapple slice, and a paper umbrella for garnish

  • Fill an 8-oz. glass with ice. Pour in light rum, orange curaçao, orange juice, lime juice, orgeat, and simple syrup.
  • Drizzle dark rum on top. Garnish with mint, pineapple slice, and paper umbrella.

Look the part Time for you. Anything in red, pink, orange, yellow and turquoise. Even better, clash them. Florals and Hawaiian prints are a must. Grass skirts and coconut bras are fun but optional but don’t forget the leis!

Above is a corset I made using a salvaged Hawaiian top. I used a clashing red lining inside.

Curl the hair Beachy hair, tousled curls, anything easy going. If you can’t or don’t want curls, pop some flowers in your hair and you’re good to go.

Beautify yourself Fresh dewy skin is the way to go regardless of colour. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise. Benefit do the best eyshadow and cheek colors for a holiday look.

Set the music Ultra Lounge do great albums of tiki, bossa nova, hawaiian and mambo. Thrift Store DJ sources great music to buy and also has a radio section that you can just click and play which saves you a lot of work.

Let the games begin So, the guests are here and the drinks and conversations are flowing. Lets throw some fun into the mix with some games: Hula hoops, coconut shy, pineapple bowling and, of course, the limbo!

Now go have some fun!
